Description

One of John Bellany’s recurring subjects: a young fisherwoman from his native fishing village of Port Seton.

In this traditional religious – and highly superstitious – Scottish community,  women were never allowed on the boats: to have done so would have been to invite bad luck. The women performed the unglamorous but essential task of gutting the fish and preparing them for market.
